Wealth and Welfare: Addressing Inequality in London through Finance and Sustainability
Professor Ting Li,
Associate Professor in the Department of Management & Business
London, one of the world’s foremost financial centers, is also home to the UK’s widest income gap. This first-year seminar offers an interdisciplinary exploration of inequality in London, drawing from history, economics, sociology, and finance. Students will examine the historical roots of poverty, the economic systems that reinforce inequality, and the social structures that both sustain and challenge these divides. The course also focuses on the emerging field of sustainable finance—exploring tools such as social impact bonds and green investments—as a pathway toward greater equity and long-term sustainability. Through critical readings, discussion-based seminars, case studies, and hands-on community projects, students will connect theoretical concepts to real-world challenges, developing a deeper understanding of how finance intersects with social justice in one of the most dynamic yet divided cities in the world.
